Sometimes it amazes me! but LA has to be one of a few
cities that has two downtownlike areas all within
the same city limits!
I think Century City by itself would be a mayor skyline player

Actually leeinvenice, he is right that building is MGM Tower. Its got the MGM sign on top. I believe SunAmerica is directly behind it from this angle.

Nope, check again, the building that you are refering to is more square and it says Sun America on the top of it. The MGM tower is directly west of the Centry Plaza Hotel, it has not been built in the photo above. If the MGM tower were in this photo, it would block out the St. Regis hotel (just betweeen the Century Plaza Hotel and the Fox building). Study the diffrent set backs on the MGM Tower and you'll see the one in the Centry City Skyline pic has no set backs, just goes straight up..

Is there anything going on in the Century City area? Any devlelopments, or is the office market stalled right now?
What about residential? It seems like this would be a strong market for residential highrises. (as would the entire LA Basin IMO)

A new building is being build by avenue of the stars that will actually change dramatically the appearence not only of the twin towers, but the whole Century City scenario!

These towers were always in the establishing shots of that old CBS series Family Law (very popular in Australia on Network 10). I knew it was supposed to be LA but it didn't quite look like the LA skyline to me - this explains why. Very cool!

Yeah, those towers are also in the Steven Martin movie "The Jerk." When I saw it a long time ago, I thought "those towers are not in Los Angeles, they are in Century City!" I wondered why he kept saying he was in L.A. Now that I know more about the city, I know that Century City IS Los Angeles.

Well, i believe one of the original ideas for the Century city development was to provide office space for the entertainment industry. (if you all are unclear on it's history i'll explane it later.)
Anyway the development was started in 1966, those two residental towers off Pico blvd. where the first towers, the largest component, the ABC entertainment complex, or the "theme" towers, went in, in 1973,4 and includes one of the largest excavations in the world, (parking under the towers, goes down 7 levels) and the architect, Minoru Yamasaki's original plan called for a 100 story single, triangular tower, But the landing approch to the Santa Monica airport is over the site, in the end the FAA permitted max. height 600', so we got twin 44's instead. And not only did they go up at the same time as the World Trade Center, in New York, the structural system is almost identcal to the WTC, although based on 3 as opposed to 4. the corner footings took 30, ten yard cement mixers each, and as they had to cure at the same rate, all 6 where poured simultaneously.
As with New York City, a west coast version of Rockafellar Center, Total buildout came with the completion of the 34 story MGM tower in 2000, (the Fox tower, and the Marriot hotel where developed by Fox, and the parcels of land not in the Century City development.
I personally think the development, locating some 10 million sq.ft. 10 miles from the CBD was a great foresite in the overall development of the city of Los Angeles, although from the beginning i think subway or lightrail, should have had priority status to Century City.
Consider the picture of this city in 100 years, when the area between Downtown and Century City looks like Sao Paulo, Brazil, with two fully developed CBD's at each end. great thinking.!!! and i also helped build it, installing plumbing systems in both the 24 story, Watt City Center towers, and the second, 16 story, Northrop tower.
With the plans that are proposed for CC, (most notably, the residental tower to replace the St. Regis hotel, by the great New York architect, Robert A M Stern) this development has a great future.
A footnote; the theme towers were only 11% occupied, for almost 5 years, becoming fully leased in 1982

Century City scares me. It's like just a 3-D model of a place, without the actual stuff.
I probably sound like East Coasters talking about LA.. but I think they're just confused and think all of LA is like century city: wide alienating roads, buildings with no street level retail, unusable private parks, gated off housing "communities," all centered around a big mall.

February 6th, 2006, 08:51 AM
As someone who has worked in Century City for more than fifteen years, let me say that Century City is a good example of exactly what not to do when planning a city. There is no street life. Residential areas are cut off from commercial areas. No mixed use. And the only linking development in the whole mess, the ABC entertainment complex has just been knocked down to put up another tall. Streets are difficult to cross and the only lively area is the shopping center which is a classic example of park, shop, go to the movie, never leave the center, drive away. The atmosphere in Century City is sterile and needs to be avoided in further developments, regardless of how pretty the skyline may look. City life is at street level. Century City has no life at street level.

Yep I worked in CC for about a year. I'm convinced that the area spawns a mutant human that has no lips, pale grey skin and drives hybrid cars. Their is also a female counterpart that wears sneakers with dresses.

February 7th, 2006, 09:17 AM
my question is whether century city is supposed to have a downtown feel to it. not all places of business have to be gathering places. because of CCs location (surrounded by golf courses, single family homes, and movie studios, not to mention not very accesible by freeway), its not the most friendly place to hang out or walk around, and i dont think it was designed to be that way. i work in century city, eat out there a couple of times a week and it serves its purpose. i go to work in an urban environment, i can eat at almost any of the high rise buildings, and if i need to get some shopping done on my lunch break or after work, there's a mall down the street. not to mention, all of this can be done while my car is parked. now, i wish i could take a train to work, or even have a bus get me there in under an hour, but the fact there are so many jobs in such a small place is great for the further urbanization of Los Angeles.
Anyways, my point is that maybe CC is a bit sterile, but it serves its purpose and i think it serves it well. the financial district in NYC really has nothing to offer besides high rises either. if you really are looking for something interesting, westwood, venice, and santa monica really arent that far away and they have plenty to offer.

February 8th, 2006, 02:06 AM
no its not. in fact century city is not dense at all compared to DTLA. check out the hostoric core, there is no way that CC has that much density or even when we consider new towers, because Bunker hill has more density than cc

Century City is probably a fourth of the real skyline.
Century City, Was intended to be the Rockafeller center of the west, and it's skyline, (five towers over 500') and office space, ( over 8 million sq.ft.) it could be concidered the equivelent of a downtown area of a city with a population of 650,000, to 1 million people.
Now if the proposed condo towers go up, more will follow. ( it would be interesting to see what site's will get residential towers) remember it was conceved in the 1960's, and the urban model, has changed since those days.
and good call, if your talking the basin skyline, yes around 20, to 25 % of the skyline, (of the city of LA)
